Every resident and community supports trails and recreation projects. The challenge is often identifying exactly where new projects should be located - especially with varying land ownership, competing land uses, and sensitive habitats. Visitors use recreation assets and more. Tourism has become a significant part of the economy in most communities. Communities can benefit from inventorying their assets, researching markets, and then strategically planning and investing so this sector can grow in ways local residents and the community support.

Representative Work:

Auke Lake Trail Plan (2005)
Work with University of Alaska Southeast and CBJ (landowners), residents, students, DOT&PF and others to site a recreational trail around Auke Lake. Sheinberg designed and facilitated public meetings, researched and addressed and land use issues, as subcontractor to R&M Engineering.

Needs Assessment - Downtown Juneau Visitor Information Center (2003)
Complete a market analysis and assessment of visitor information-related needs, services and facilities to determine if a new Visitor Center in downtown Juneau is warranted, and to recommend options for providing improved services and facilities.  Project included surveys of visitor information service providers and users to identify existing services, needs and “gaps;” survey comparable centers in other high-tourism locations; forecast demands and potential revenues; and recommend options for meeting needs.  Sheinberg was project manager for tem with MRV Architects, Charles Bettisworth and Company (architect), the McDowell Group and USKH Consultants.

Amalga-Eagle Beach Public Lands Planning (2003)
Facilitate a year-long city/state/public planning process for public lands important for recreation, cultural/historic and environmental resources.  Products include a proposed trails/facilities plan and letter of agreement between City and Borough of Juneau and state land managers.

Tok Public Lands Information Study (2002) 
Evaluate and recommend potential sites in the Tok area for construction of a new Alaska Public Information Lands Center (APLIC) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service administrative headquarters.  Facilitate public meetings; provide public information.  Team with architecture firm, Charles Bettisworth & Company, who developed a use program and conceptual site layout for the facilities.

Haines Public Use and Access Plan (2001)
Work with City of Haines staff, Council, planning commission residents to identify future public access and use of coastal areas and develop series of recommended improvements (and funding options).  Includes beach access, disabled access, pathways and trails, and more.

Haines Chamber of Commerce (2000) 
Assist a diverse collective of community groups in designing a collaborative process to solve conflicts with human and bear interactions at the Chilkoot River.  Facilitate initial stakeholder meetings.

Juneau Shoreside Fishery Enhancement Project (1999)
Facilitate public, team and agency meetings; and prepare and submit permit application to state and federal agencies for a State DOT&PF shore-side sport fishery enhancement project next to the DIPAC hatchery in Juneau. Sheinberg Associates authored the team’s environmental documentation. The project was constructed in 2001.  In 2002, this project won the “Project of the Year Award” from both the American Society of Civil Engineers-Juneau Branch, and Alaska Society of Professional Engineers-Southeastern Alaska chapter. Project challenges included special outreach to Juneau’s disabled community, transit considerations, and project design to address environmental and tourist concerns. Sheinberg was subcontractor to R&M Engineering.

Tourism Analysis, Goals and Actions (1996)
Analyze effects of tourism in Juneau.  Responsible for analysis of infrastructure used by tourists and for developing the community's Tourism Goals & Action Steps. Team with McDowell Group.
